In a renewed push to confront Nigeria’s security challenges, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has strengthened its partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, as its National President, Bello Lawal, led a high-level delegation to meet with the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in Abuja.
The high-profile meeting at the Force Headquarters signaled a strategic alignment between local government leadership and national law enforcement authorities aimed at enhancing security across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Addressing the gathering, Lawal reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to supporting the police in combating insecurity, emphasizing that sustainable security must be driven from the grassroots. He outlined plans to scale up intelligence sharing, deepen community policing structures, and promote operational collaboration between local councils and security agencies.
The ALGON president also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing IGP Disu, describing the move as a critical step toward strengthening the nation’s security architecture. He pledged the association’s full backing for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in ensuring safer communities.
The delegation included prominent ALGON leaders such as Odunayo Ategbero, Evan Enekwe, Alabi Kolade, and Alphonsus Ubanesse, alongside other key stakeholders.
Lawal further condemned recent unauthorized intrusions at the ALGON Secretariat, describing them as a violation of constitutional order. While noting that the association had exercised restraint, he warned that any further attempts would be met with firm legal action.
In his response, IGP Disu welcomed the initiative and commended ALGON for its longstanding contributions to policing efforts, including past support through the provision of operational vehicles. He assured the delegation of the Police Force’s readiness to enhance collaboration with local governments and adopt modern policing strategies to address evolving security threats.
“Our shared goal is the protection of lives and property. Strengthening this partnership is essential to achieving lasting security across the country,” Disu stated.
